🛠 Making the Emmy Doll 🛠

August 4, 2025 printing two heads and caps on bambu A1

I am printing my first BJD, a doll named "Emmy" by Dolls by Nika https://cults3d.com/@Dollsbynika. This model is only available to purchase as STL files from the artist directly. I will be attempting to print the doll on my Bambu Labs A1 printer with PLA filament rather than resin. I love resin dolls, but I hate the toxicity of working with resin- I find unless I am very strict with my PPE it makes me sneeze and gives me a sore throat. Resin allergies tend to get worse with exposure, so I only print in resin if I have to.

layer shift on the head caps a gap between face and cap

Unfortunately, I got a layer shift across both headcaps. Not sure why but I am going to print these again and make sure my infill isn't set to the default grid, and maybe also try Arachne walls.

support effects under the chin faces with supports removed

The supports have left a little bit of a rough patch under the chin. I will sand these areas down. From the front I think most of the detail was kept with minimal lines. This is at 0.1mm layer height. I will try and update this blog with more photos as I go along.

🛠 The printing continues 🛠

August 5, 2025 Screenshot of 3D printing progress

I have had a little trouble with some of the pieces stringing and leaving the print bed. I have been printing mostly in the orientation that the files arrived in, as they seem to be oriented correctly for printing, but the tope part of the arms totally failed the first time so I flipped them 180 degrees. That seemed to work better so I am doing the same thing here with the leg pieces.

🛠 Spaghetti for breakfast 🛠

August 6, 2025 3d printer spaghetti

Safe to say the spaghetti problem remains. Two of the four pieces printed ok, the one turning to pasta I skipped when I saw this happening from my phone, but actually the other leg piece was also messed up at the bottom, and probably why the second one failed completely. Time to flip it around again...
